One question I have always wondered is, why is school so early??? I have been going to school for 12 years now and I still don’t have an answer. Every single morning I’m up at 6 am getting ready for school. The sky is still pitch black and my whole family is still sleeping, but here I am being forced to be up.
Currently I go to a school that starts at 8:05am and school bus pick up is between 7-7:30am. I will never get how such an early start time will be benefit me in life. I know of very few jobs that require you wake up before 7:00 every single day of the week, except for the teachers at the school. One of the main reasons our school board, the Waterloo Region District School Board, made school so early is to save money on busing transportation. It is cheaper to get a bus early in the morning at 7am then getting a bus at 8am. By changing the school start times for the 168 schools in the school Waterloo region district school board, the board is saving 2 million dollars on busing. Another downside to this is 21 schools have to go to school before 8:30. Why can’t the board put in just a little extra money to let that 12% of schools not suffer. Lots of money would still be saved even with these 21 school times started after 8:30. If that money cost for changing the times of those 21 schools is that big of a deal i’m sure most parents would pay some money to pay for busing. A survey on my current class show that only 50% of my peers get bused to school. Now with these time changes, kids that don’t even get a bus are suffering early start time for a reason that doesn’t have anything to do with them. Did you know teens age 13-18 are supposed to get an average of 9 ½ hours of sleep a day to keep their growing minds healthy?(http://www.nationwidechildrens.org/sleep-in-adolescents ) Having an early school start time does not help this in any way. A study from my grade 10 class showed that 64% of kids get up before 6:30am and 85% of kids go to bed after 10pm. This mean, 35% of my class is getting the required amount of sleep needed. Parents always tell their kids, if you have to get up early just go to bed sooner, but it’s not that simple. As my classmates shared many spend their evenings doing things like homework, jobs, sports teams, clubs and chores. These requirements make us stay up late and get less hours of sleep during the night. If school times could be changed to at least an hour later, teens would be able to stay up later as well as get the required 9 ½ hours of sleep. When teens don’t get enough sleep we tend to get very moody and make bad decisions. Studies have also shown that teens with less sleep academic performances suffer. This just proves that making school start early doesn’t actually benefit the students at all the only people it's benefiting is the union. I hope that one day the union will give what is best for students and not for the budget. I hope that kids will be able to go school at a reasonable time and not have to deal with early mornings because there is nothing worse.
